President's Column
By Robyn Cummings

Hello everyone.

The installation of the new Board was held at the June 19, 2008, meeting and that puts me officially in the President’s seat. Now what do I do?

Seriously, I am looking forward to this upcoming year. For those of you who missed the meeting, your new Board is as follows: Robyn Cummings, President. Katrina Chesney, President Elect/Program Manager, Tina Player – Treasurer. Sheri Fox – Membership Chair. and Laurel Bowen, Public Relations/Newsletter/Webmaster. I will be covering the secretary position until someone steps up to take this position. Please, if you are interested, contact me.

My theme for this year is “Support Your Local NAWBO Chapter and Members.” I would like for our current membership to become a closer group, wherein we can support each other in our businesses and personal lives. I hope to accomplish this by having some social gatherings in addition to our monthly luncheon, providing good luncheon speakers pertaining to our businesses, and having some sessions where we brainstorm on issues. I am also setting a goal of working with our national sponsors at our local level, to obtain more benefits for our membership.

I’m extending a warm hand to all of the past presidents to please come and join us during our luncheons and events we will be having in the upcoming year. You are needed just as much now as you were when you were on the board. Please do come join us.

The July meeting should be a good one. We are going to have NAWBO 101. Here, we are going to show you the websites, local and national, and what you can achieve from visiting these sites. I look forward to seeing all of you on July 17, 2008. Please always feel free to contact me regarding anything to do with the NAWBO or if you just need to run something by someone.

Sincerely,

Robyn M. Cummings

The New Year is Half-way Through
Laurel Bowen, your publicity chair up on the soapbox

There's not enough hours in the day to get everything done. I've got way too many things to do and I do have to sleep. Yes, if you own a business you are busier than the average woman. You must focus on the important things, the essentials, and say no to all the other stuff. But are you really choosing what you do with your time as wisely as you can?

Take 30 minutes and create a list of all the activities you are involved in. In a second column write a list of your goals for this year. It's now halfway through 2008. As you write them, make a mental note of how far you've gotten towards meeting those goals.

Now use a highlighter and use one color for goals met, a different color for goals that you haven't met yet, but are working towards and feel you will finish by the end of the year, and a third color for goals that you are not making progress towards.

Then take a look at the activities you do. Are there things that are keeping you from obtaining some goals. What can you delegate?(Don't forget to delegate to your significant other and children, as well as employees, contractors, friends, and committee members). What can be deleted completely from your list or put off until next month or year? (stuff like cleaning the house always goes on my later list). What activities should you be more involved in to help you reach those goals?

I did this little exercise - took me about 30 minutes. I decided to remain an elder at my church, but give up my Christian Education chair, remain a member of BPW, but stop going to meetings as it didn't help me obtain any of my "this year" goals. I'll start back when I feel it does meet a new goal. I hired Katrina Chesney as a virtual assistant (one of our NAWBO members). It's more cost-effective for me to pay her to do administrative stuff so I can spend my time finding new work and doing billiable work. Last, I volunteered for expanded duties for our NAWBO chapter this year -- to do publicity. What? I added an activity?

There is a reason, obviously. I feel that our NAWBO chapter members have been great mentors for me and that I've learned a lot from speakers and the national conventions. But most importantly, being active in NAWBO is the best motivational tool I have for helping me grow my business. So I want to be more involved to help the chapter grow. Adding new members, helping to find great speakers, adding new programs, all these things will help me in my goal this year of growing my business.

What should you spend the rest of 2008 doing?

then
