A Note about Lunch and After Hours Meetings
By Katrina Chesney, Your Vice President, Meeting Manager, and owner of Portable Hands

One of the focus areas we have planned for this upcoming year is that we want to involve members in presenting topics of interest at lunch meetings. This will give you an opportunity to let other members know what your business is about. We want to provide you with as many opportunities to network as we can. Don't be shy, if you have a topic that would be of interest please contact me at Katrina@portablehands.com, or 706-861-0559.

If you really aren't sure if you have a topic that is of interest to members, but would love the opportunity to speak at a lunch and tell about your business, call me. I can guide you towards a topic that will be useful. Every one of you has experience that is invaluable to other members. Secondly, we are going to have one After Hours meeting each month. If you hate to speak, but would like to host an evening meeting at your place of business, providing snacks and drinks, we would love to visit you. Again, this is a networking opportunity we want to provide you that would be inexpensive. Please email me or call me with the month that you would like to host. Dates are flexible.

President's Column
By Robyn Cummings

Hello Everyone,

We are starting our monthly evening meeting this month with a networking event at the Walden Club sponsored by Pat Egen. Each month we will have both a lunch meeting (always the 3rd Thursday) and an after hours meeting. We want to offer you more opportunities to network each month.

We are also scheduling a web conference on how to get more from your NAWBO national and local websites. The local website will soon have more features to help you market your business.

In October, we are planning a candidate's forum for our evening meeting, to help you decide which candidates are small business friendly.

We still need a Secretary for this year. It's the easiest job on the board and takes about 2 hours a month. All you have to do is take minutes during the meeting (and we can record the meeting so you don't miss anything) then edit your notes and send them out to the board before the next board meeting. You get a vote on the board. It's an opportunity to steer our local organization in the direction you want it to move. We also need a historian. Contact me at robyn@rctrans.info if you would like to volunteer.

We are offering sponsorship opportunities again this year.

The Economy is in the Toilet - Naturally You'll Start Wearing Lipstick
by Jennifer Romolini
reprinted from Shine

There was a story in last week's New York Times about how the sales of lipstick—not gloss—are an economic indicator and how, in tough times, women in this country turn not only to just smaller indulgences to quell their retail fix, but specifically lipstick. At first I read this and felt the same way I did about the whole "dresses are dead" thing. Like, "Oh, New York Times, you style prophet, tell me Oracle, what else will I wear next year?" But then I realized I'm actually way, way, way tired of lipgloss. I'm sick of it's glossiness, it's very celebrity slickness and I'm especially over how it gets stuck to my hair. According to the article, you will be buying lipstick for three reasons: 1. It's a small indulgence, "an inexpensive treat meant to substitute for a bigger-ticket item." 2. It's a "morale booster like Charlie Chaplin films were during the depression" 3. Women wear lipstick, “to put forward an image that they are more alive and more vibrant, and not as down in the mouth. It’s part of the uniform of desirability and attractiveness." Will you make the switch? To a 1940s red perhaps? Source: NY Times.
