President's Column
By Celeste Friend

Hi Ladies,

As we head yet again into the Holidays, I pause to consider where we’ve been – and where we want to go with NAWBO.  At the November meeting, I would like to have a discussion on this subject.  We need your input about what is valuable to you and how NAWBO can become even more valuable to you.  What does your business (or life) need?  Perhaps, as a group, we can find a way to fill these needs.  Sometimes, we aren’t able to verbalize the need, but we know where we want to be and the path between here and there is blocked.  Let’s see where a brainstorming session takes us!

We are coming off another very successful Nautilus Awards year.  We had four nominees, sponsored the Pearl of Promise (again, many thanks to Custom Services Inc and Advanced Paper) and announced sponsorship next year for the Stargazer Award.  As stated at the Awards luncheon, we are moving the NAWBO sponsorship from the Pearl of Promise to the Stargazer.  It would be my fondest wish for NAWBO to sponsor BOTH awards next year.  And all that takes is (drum roll, please) money.  If your business is doing well and could use some publicity, good will, and a tax deduction then maybe you, too, could be a NAWBO Corporate Partner.  Please contact me for more details.

Start planning now for our Christmas Party in December and our gift swap with legalized stealing.  Maybe Nesha will decide to re-gift the ceramic holly vase she snatched last year?  This is always a really fun meeting so plan to attend.

Spotlight on Good Taste: Chef Melanie Cox

Chef Melanie Cox, owner of Without Reservations Personal Chef Service, is inspired by Annie Dillard's quote “How we spend our days, is, of course, how we spend our lives”, and spends her days doing things so that that when she looks back in 50 years, she'll be happy about how she's spent her life. Certainly, Melanie's clients will be happy.

Melanie is a native of tiny Sunshine, North Carolina, near Golden Valley in Western NC's foothills, and came to professional cooking by an interesting path. She has a Master’s Degree in Counseling/Student Development, and expected her career would always involve working with college students, but when her family moved to Winston-Salem, there were no openings in her field. Melanie served as a Regional, and later Metro Division, Director for the American Heart Association, and was later a stay-at-home mom. When her children were older, Melanie says, "I stumbled on the personal chef business, and realized that it was EXACTLY what I wanted to do. Cooking has always been one of my favorite things, and I’d thought about the culinary school/restaurant idea, and dismissed it because of the long hours involved in restaurant work. Becoming a personal chef took care of that little problem."

Melanie says she has two favorite things about being a personal chef: being the heroine of someone's kitchen, allowing them to eat the type of meals that they want to eat even if they don’t have the time or inclination to cook, and also putting together social events, small dinner parties and events for clients which allow them to be a guest at their own parties.

Without Reservations opened in Chattanooga in 2005, after Melanie's husband's career brought them to town. Melanie loves being a woman business owner because "It’s mine – I get to do things the way I want to. Right now, I still have young children, so it’s important to me to be there for them. Owning my own business allows me to make that a priority." Melanie's family includes her husband, Doug, and three beautiful daughters: Katy is 13, Elisabeth is 10, and Abigail, whom the Cox's adopted from China at age 11 months, just turned 7. When asked what we might find surprising about this personal chef who creates such culinary delights, she divulges, "I love McDonald’s french fries".
